The Rose Breeding Process
1. Selecting Parents
The journey to creating a new rose begins with choosing two parent roses. These roses are carefully selected based on their desirable traits, such as colour, fragrance, and vase life.
Our rose breeders need to possess a keen intuition for identifying roses that will compliment each other and produce offspring with exceptional qualities. They tirelessly search for plants that carry the specific characteristics they aim to perpetuate in their new creations.
2. Hybridisation
Once suitable parent roses have been chosen, the process of cross-pollination takes place. Pollen is collected from one parent rose and meticulously applied to the stigma of the other. This delicate task, typically performed by bees in nature, is meticulously carried out by our breeders who manually transfer pollen using paintbrushes. This process results in the development of rose hips containing approximately ten seeds, each a unique blend of genetic material from both parents.
3. Seed Sowing
Once the rose hips have fully matured, the precious seeds are carefully extracted and sown in greenhouse benches. These seeds germinate into young plants, each displaying a diverse range of characteristics inherited from their parent roses. Grandiflora can geminate 25,000 young plants each year.

4. Initial Selection
The first stage of selection begins as soon as the seedlings emerge. Our breeders meticulously evaluate each young plant, identifying those with the most promising traits. These chosen seedlings are then transferred to glasshouse trials for further assessment under real-world conditions. At this stage we select 7,000 young plants to our 1 plant selection trial.

5. Field Trials
The field trial phase allows breeders to observe the mature rose plants in hydroponic growing conditions in our environmentally controlled glasshouses. Over several years, we carefully evaluate the plants for the desired traits, such as flower size, colour, fragrance, stem length, and vase life. The most outstanding performers are selected for further propagation.

6. Final Selection
After years of meticulous evaluation, we are left with a small collection of exceptional rose varieties. The final stage involves making the crucial decision of which varieties will be deemed worthy of commercialisation. Only a select few roses will ultimately be chosen to become commercially grown, grace the market, representing the culmination of years of dedicated breeding efforts.
